Agronomic performance of the newly introduced Ma’afala cultivar (Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg) on the Isle of Youth, Cuba

The breadfruit tree Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg is characterized by its high nutritional value for both humans and animals. The ma’afala cultivar is notable for its short stature and high productivity; it was introduced to Cuba in 2016 through a research and development project, meaning there is limited scientifically rigorous data regarding its performance. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the agronomic performance of the ma’afala cultivar during the nursery and establishment phases. The study was conducted within the production area of the Technology Dissemination Group; 100 plants were planted at the "Ángel Amador" farm owned by producer Ulises Tobías García and located on Camino 29 in the city of Nueva Gerona, Isla de la Juventud, where standard crop management practices were applied. Growth variables were evaluated during both the nursery and establishment phases (nursery: height, trunk thickness, leaf length, visual leaf count; establishment: plant height, trunk circumference, canopy width [cardinal directions], and plant age). Results showed that the nursery seedlings achieved good vegetative development (appearing vigorous), while those in the establishment phase exhibited excellent growth, reaching an average height of 5.50 m; trunk circumference of 53.9 cm, and a canopy width of 3.10 m (north-south) and 3.23 m (east-west); five years after planting, the trees stand five meters tall. It is concluded that the seedlings produced in the semi-protected nursery were of high quality, and the plants established in the field exhibited vigorous development after five years.
