This narrative review aimed to analyze the impact of banana peel meal (Musa paradisiaca L.) on feed efficiency, productive performance, and meat quality in broiler chickens. Complementary and comparative information on the use of this byproduct in the diets of other animal species was incorporated to broaden the nutritional and productive context of its utilization. Relevant scientific information was compiled from recognized databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and ScienceDirect, from which 50 articles were selected. The results show that its nutritional composition is favorable, although there is variability in the reported inclusion levels. In general, it has been determined that a 10% inclusion level allows for maintaining or improving feed conversion, weight gain, and intestinal health, in addition to reducing feed costs. Some studies report improvements in slaughter yield and meat quality characteristics, especially when the byproduct is subjected to processes such as fermentation. However, knowledge gaps remain regarding the variability of results depending on the inclusion level and type of processing, as well as the limited information on long-term effects and the physicochemical attributes of the meat. Although this alternative is emerging as a sustainable option in poultry feed, more standardized studies are needed to optimize its use safely and efficiently.
Keywords: Poultry, fiber, nutrition, production, byproduct.
