Effect of body condition in sows on piglet viability until weaning

Sow body condition positively impacts production parameters, hence its importance in the profitability of pig farms. The objective was to evaluate the effect of sow body condition at farrowing on piglet viability until weaning and weaning weight (30 days). An analytical observational study was conducted with 1,025 piglets born to 33 sows. Descriptive statistics were calculated; the BCS-viability association was analyzed using Chi-square and Cramer's V tests; the effect of BCS on weaning weight was contrasted using ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis tests. Viability was higher in BCS 3–3.5 (96.39% and 95.76%), and the average weaning weight showed an upward gradient from 6.37 kg (BCS 2) to 8.34 kg (BCS 3.5). The results suggest that a BCS of 3–3.5 is an effective management goal for increasing survival and weaned weight per litter.
