Abstract
Animal welfare was evaluated in dual-purpose cattle from family farms in El Empalme Canton, Ecuador, using Welfare Quality® indicators and multivariate analyses, in a non-experimental, descriptive, cross-sectional study with 75 farms (unit of analysis), selected from 105 systems initially assessed. Indicators covered feeding, housing, health, and behavior. Based on compliance, welfare was classified as Good (>75%), Fair (50-75%), or Poor (<50%): 14.67% of farms were Good, 68.0% Fair, and 17.33% Poor. Principal Component Analysis retained two components explaining 36.14% of total variance. Multinomial logistic regression showed higher odds of the Poor category associated with absence of formal training (OR = 2.85; p = 0.008), non-continuous confinement (OR = 1.52; p = 0.039), and pain recognition (OR = 1.28; p = 0.015), and lower odds with use of anesthesia or analgesia (OR = 0.38; p = 0.021). The instrument showed acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.76). Producer training and pain mitigation are priority areas for improving animal welfare in these systems.
