HOW DOES ALCOHOL AFFECT MY ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE?: THE SELF-PERCEPTION OF ECUADORIAN ADOLESCENTS

This study aimed to analyze the self-perception of Ecuadorian adolescents regarding the influence of alcohol consumption on their academic performance. A descriptive and cross-sectional approach was used, applying the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) to assess alcohol consumption patterns and a specifically designed ad hoc survey to measure students’ perceptions of how alcohol affects their academic performance. The sample consisted of 200 students, aged 14–17 years. The results revealed that 70.5% of students perceived that alcohol consumption negatively influenced their academic performance. Additionally, 47% rated their performance as "average" and 34.5% as "poor." Students also reported that their academic responsibilities were affected by incidents of excessive alcohol consumption. The conclusions highlight the importance of implementing preventive and educational programs in schools to address the risks associated with alcohol consumption and its consequences on academic performance
