DIGITAL SUPPORT NETWORKS FOR OLDER ADULTS

Abstract

Support networks in older people are defined as the relationships that connect the person with their social environment; the knowledge society has caused these networks to extend to the digital world. The relevance of digital support networks is due to the fact that they represent a new resource that contributes to the well-being of older adults, highlighting their role in reducing social isolation and improving their quality of life. The objective of this study was to analyze the digital support networks of 25 older adults from a gerontological care center in the city of Ambato. Through interviews and ecomaps, the experiences and perceptions of the participants regarding the use of these networks were explored. The findings reveal that, although some face technological barriers, the majority value social networks for facilitating communication with their loved ones and contributing to their emotional well-being. However, challenges related to lack of digital skills and access to devices persist, underscoring the need to overcome these limitations for active and healthy aging
