RACISM AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT OF MINORITY POPULATIONS OF CUENCA IN AZUAY PROVINCE IN THE YEAR 2022

Abstract

This document studies the problem of racism in the Cuenca canton, exploring its influence on the social and human development of minority populations. Through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates sociology, anthropology and psychology, we seek to understand the intersections of cultural, structural and psychological factors that shape the experiences of these communities.  The cultural diversity of the city of Cuenca has forged a unique and complex identity, but minority populations have faced centuries of marginalization and exclusion. A quantitative methodology was used through a survey directed at individuals who represent social minorities, focusing on important aspects of access to services and perception of discrimination. It is concluded that racism negatively influences the economic, social and cultural development of minority populations in Cuenca. Due to the cultural diversity of our societies, this document sheds light on the resistance and adaptation strategies that minority communities have developed to face the adversities of racism, which was corroborated by the literature reviewed. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of how racism shapes identities, opportunities and aspirations, while discussing the challenges faced by these populations in Cuenca.
