DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT OF ADOLESCENTS

Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify the effects caused by domestic violence in the adolescents of the Réplica “Manta” School. The approach applied was a mixed one, which made it possible to cover more information based on the experiences that the adolescents lived and the different cases known to the key informants. Survey techniques were applied to 50 students, as well as 5 interviews directed at DECE teachers and staff. Lastly, 2 life stories were conducted with students anonymously to learn about their experience and effects as a consequence of domestic violence. When applying these techniques, the results were obtained that 90% of the adolescents surveyed are aware of this problem and the effects it causes and 100% recognize that they can be emotionally affected within the social, educational and family sphere. The interviewees shared that the Adolescents are affected emotionally and socially, also noticing poor academic performance in students; on the other hand, they stated that not all adolescents have the same effects. In conclusion, it is possible to identify that this problem affects adolescents in their psychosocial development, having a different impact among them depending on the level of violence they have faced, taking into account the similarities of their effects within the family, social and educational sphere, poor academic and emotional performance. The purpose of this article is to provide knowledge to social workers and professionals interested in the topic, expanding their knowledge about this problem of domestic violence.
