GENDER VIOLENCE FROM A MALE PERSPECTIVE AT ULEAM

Abstract

This article analyzes the male perception of gender-based violence at the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí. Based on the need to highlight men's experiences in this issue, the research broadens the understanding of the phenomenon beyond its traditional association with female victimization. The general objective of the study was to investigate gender-based violence from the perspective of male students at Uleam, identifying their recognition of the problem, its causes, and consequences.  The methodology employed was quantitative, using structured surveys applied to a sample of 372 male students. The results revealed that 62% of respondents perceived gender-based violence as a problem within the university, while 88% recognized the existence of various forms of violence, including physical, psychological, and sexual violence. Additionally, it was determined that the lack of education on gender equality is a key factor contributing to the persistence of violence, as many students lack adequate information on the subject. Among the main consequences, mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder were highlighted, as well as a negative impact on academic performance and social development of those affected. Therefore, the urgency of promoting a culture of awareness and empathy toward victims is emphasized, along with the integration of gender equality education at all educational levels.
