FACTORS INFLUENCING FAMILY NEGLECT AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN THE PARISH OF TRIUNFO DORADO

Abstract

It is considered that family abandonment of older adults in the parish Triunfo Dorado of the canton Centinela del Cóndor has increased in the first semester of 2024, seeking with the present research work to examine the socioeconomic, cultural and structural factors that contribute to this phenomenon, for which we worked with a descriptive non-experimental approach, applying a qualitative research methodology based on surveys to local residents and proposing recommendations to mitigate the problem, improving the welfare of older adults through the application of an in-depth interview, in which 40 older adults participated, to verify the causes or effects that originate this social problem. The research focused on observing and documenting the factors that influence family abandonment of older adults, with 37% of the respondents indicating that they feel bad because their own children have abandoned them, in addition, 75% of the older adults do not have sufficient economic resources, which leads to not having access to medical services and covering their basic needs. The data were processed using excel software, where it was determined that the factors of midlife crisis are mainly due to wear and tear, discouragement and disillusionment, as well as the experience that older adults live when they are not socially accepted, confirming the existence of such factors that influence the abandonment of this vulnerable group.
