EFFECTS OF NEGLECT ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF OLDER ADULTS AT THE QUIJOS GERONTOLOGICAL CENTER

Abstract

The article entitled “Effects of Abandonment on the Quality of Life of Older Adults in the Quijos Gerontological Center” investigates the problem of abandonment in older adults and its impact on the quality of life of the residents of the Quijos Gerontological Residential Center, located in the province of Napo, Ecuador. The research addresses the growing aging population and how it increases the vulnerability of older adults to abandonment, both by their families and by the institutions in charge of their care. In addition, it explores the negative repercussions of neglect on physical, emotional and psychological health, including increased incidence of disease, such as feelings of loneliness and depression. The study employs a mixed methodology, combining quantitative and qualitative methods to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon. Data were collected through surveys and interviews with residents and gerontological center staff. The results show that neglect significantly affects the well-being of older adults, deteriorating their quality of life and increasing their dependency. Among the main conclusions, it highlights the need to implement intervention strategies focused on preventing abandonment and improving the quality of life of older adults, including the creation of family support programs, the training of caregivers and the strengthening of social support networks. In addition, the importance of public policies that guarantee respect for and protection of the rights of older adults is emphasized.
