Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS) are pervasive patterns of thoughts, emotions, and memories that can negatively influence a person’s mental health. In adolescents, these schemas are often linked to the development of depression. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the severity of depression and the 18 early maladaptive schemas in adolescents. For the correlation analysis, 81 adolescents between the ages of 16 and 18 with severe and very severe depressive symptoms from the Unidad Educativa Fiscal Olmedo in Portoviejo were selected. They were administered the Young Schema Questionnaire YSQ-S3 and the Patient Health Questionnaire PHQ-9. Data analysis was conducted using the statistical program SPSS with Spearman’s correlation analysis. The Spearman correlations between depression and schemas were positive and significant, although of low magnitude with 7 of the schemas: emotional deprivation (rs = .305, p = .006), abandonment/instability (rs = .277, p = .012), mistrust/abuse (rs = .308, p = .005), defectiveness/shame (rs = .341, p = .002), dependence/incompetence (rs = .223, p = .045), subjugation (rs = .256, p = .021), and negativity/pessimism (rs = .301, p = .006), and not significant with 11 of the schemas. The results obtained from this population are useful for better understanding depression in adolescents and the influence of early maladaptive schemas.
