Grief in old age: a psychological approach to promote the quality of life of the bereaved spouse in Angola

Abstract

This scientific article presents a psychological approach to grief in old age, focusing on promoting the quality of life of the bereaved spouse in Angola. Resulting from academic practices conducted by students in the Psychology course at the Higher Polytechnic Institute of Bié, the research aims primarily to identify the peculiarities of the grieving process in old age at the Elavoko Lyumwenho Elderly Home, located in the Cangalo neighborhood, Municipality of Cuito, Province of Bié, Angola. With a focus on the bereaved spouse, for the development of a psychological guidance strategy that addresses the emotional needs of this group, promoting their quality of life and aging with dignity. Through qualitative analysis, based on literature review and practical experiences, the study highlights the importance of individualized and community psychological support to facilitate healthy adaptation to grief. The proposed plan aims to contribute to the development of effective interventions in the Angolan context, valuing the cultural and social specifics of the elderly, thus promoting the improvement of the well-being and quality of life of bereaved spouses.
