Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between caregiver burden, chronic stress, and executive functioning in primary caregivers of people with disabilities. An observational, descriptive-correlational, and cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 primary caregivers of people with physical, intellectual, or sensory disabilities from a specialized center in Cuenca, Ecuador. The Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI-22), Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version (BRIEF-A), and Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DEX) were administered, employing descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression. Caregivers showed a mean age of 47.83 years, female predominance (75%), and moderate burden levels. Executive functioning revealed mild to moderate dysfunctions, especially in working memory and planning/organization. Significant positive correlations were found between caregiver burden and all executive dimensions assessed (r=.53-.67, p<.001). Daily care hours emerged as the strongest predictor of executive dysfunction (β=.486, p<.001), with the regression model explaining 69.7% of burden variance (R²=.697). Findings confirm the positive relationship between caregiver burden and executive dysfunctions, evidencing the neuropsychological vulnerability of caregivers under chronic stress, with implications for developing specialized interventions
