This paper investigates the psychological and social changes resulting from hospitalization in the intensive care unit, not only to the patient but to all the people who make up the family nucleus, hence the importance of the present study on family dynamics to determine which it is the affectation in the family, since when the patient is in a critical condition, the relatives are obliged and need to make decisions regarding the care of the sick relative, which leads to them experiencing high levels of anxiety and depression due to the stressors to which they are exposed in the face of the crisis. The admission of a family member in an ICU produces great uncertainty and normal family dynamics are put at risk, triggering various needs in the family that, after reviewing different studies can be framed within four areas: cognitive, emotional, social and practical. Under the gaze of the family systemic approach, four life stories are described, the narrative is resignified, giving way to pain relief and understanding of the crisis. The most important results of the investigation reveal that families are experiencing a crisis characterized by feelings of guilt, helplessness and role modification in family dynamics, therefore, it is suggested that a family intervention plan be proposed for the units of intensive care.
