Abstract

The purpose of this research is to contribute to the culture of disaster prevention at ULEAM by gathering information for the construction and dissemination of an institutional self-protection manual, which are capable of promoting good practices to be followed within the academic campus and communicating the possible risk scenarios of the territory and in this way strengthen the capacity to respond to adverse events of the population of the University since despite the lessons learned that are apt to change our way of seeing the risks and disasters of the 16A earthquake, it also left uncertainty regarding the levels of vulnerability within the University. The samples to carry out this study were obtained through the application of finds to the university community in its three levels: teachers, employees and students, who as main actors perceive the vulnerabilities and risks to which they are exposed. This interview was able to determine the levels of vulnerability through the verification of knowledge about response to adverse events. Subsequently, the academic campus was inspected to identify the resources and threats found on the campus, georeferencing them using a device of geographic positioning systems (GPS). This type of technical analysis is carried out for the first time in the 32 years of existence of the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí. Finally, the information was systematized in Arcgis to design the vulnerability and capacity maps of the academic campus, which can explicitly communicate the risk scenario with the University and influence crucial decision-making for planning disaster prevention on the campus.
