Abstract

Problematic drug use is highly chronic, marked by frequent relapses and structural barriers to access and continuity of care. At CETAD Ebenezer, an experiential model predominates, with limited clinical impact and little integration of CBT, despite evidence supporting its effectiveness in reducing relapses. The objective of this study was to design a low-intensity cognitive-behavioral intervention aimed at the rehabilitation of people with problematic drug use. The Patients’ Global Impression of Change (PGIC) scale was administered to 50 male patients (18–52 years), and a focus group with 10 participants was conducted to explore perceived benefits and unmet needs of the current treatment. Perceived treatment effectiveness was moderate to low, and unmet needs were identified across five domains: clinical, relational, occupational, normative, and reintegration. In response, a 10-session program was structured to integrate into the existing experiential framework to offer a structured protocol that, through its mechanisms of change, has the potential to improve adherence and retention, reduce relapses, and promote users’ social reintegration.
