Depression as a determining factor in adherence to hemodialysis treatment.

Depression is a common condition among patients who begin hemodialysis treatment, and it has been linked to lower treatment adherence and poorer health outcomes. For this reason, the idea arose to conduct a descriptive-correlational cross-sectional study aimed at evaluating the relationship between depression and adherence to hemodialysis treatment at the Buena Vista Renal Clinic in the city of Manta, using a sample of 68 patients who were starting renal replacement therapy. Two instruments were used: the self-administered Zung scale to measure depression levels, and the MBG Therapeutic Adherence Questionnaire (developed by Martín, Bayarre, and Grau) to assess treatment adherence. The results revealed that newly admitted patients presented moderate levels of depression. Despite the prevalence of depressive symptoms, most patients showed good overall adherence to hemodialysis treatment. These findings suggest that, although depression is an important factor that can influence treatment adherence, it does not necessarily translate into low adherence or complete abandonment of renal treatment in all cases studied. It is possible that other factors, such as family support and socioeconomic conditions, play an important role in the adherence process. Therefore, it is recommended to consider these additional aspects when evaluating and developing strategies to improve treatment adherence in patients with depression.
