Abstract

The study analyzes the existing gaps between the competencies (knowledge and skills) of human talent compared to the specific needs of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in the service sector in the province of Imbabura, Ecuador, during 2024. Using a quantitative approach with a descriptive-correlational scope, the FAEDPYME 2024 database was utilized to evaluate variables related to business size, technical competencies, soft skills, and organizational innovation. The results reveal major deficiencies in digital competencies, process management, and soft skills such as leadership and teamwork; micro and small enterprises, in particular face constraints in meeting these competency demands. Furthermore, a significant relationship was identified between competency gaps and limitations in innovation and business competitiveness. The study concludes that strengthening workforce capabilities represents a strategic factor for the development of MSMEs in the services sector; therefore, it is recommended to promote training programs and public policies aimed at aligning academic education with business needs.
