Abstract

Dementia constitutes one of the main health problems worldwide, due to its high prevalence and high economic and social cost. This article provides a review of the literature aimed at finding out data that allow us to identify the effects of this disorder on the mental health of older adults. The methodology used corresponds to the search for scientific articles belonging to indexed journals, said information responds to data from the last four years. It was possible to identify the many effects of this disorder, establishing that they affect not only the cognition of the elderly, but also their state of emotional well-being, wreaking havoc on their daily and instrumental activities. The data provided by this review reveal the need for the recognition of dementia as a serious and growing public health problem worldwide.
